Back in 2010 we reported about craigslist rental scams. This is an update as it continues to be an issue. Here is a recent experience one of our clients had
The renter finds this property and contacts the “owner”
Luckily he sends this to a family member who happens to be a REALTOR®
Here is the REAL Listing the REALTOR® sends back to the family member
This family member just saved himself a LOT of heartache and trouble.
Here is the BOGUS owners messages
Steps to protect yourself.
Once you are given the address google it, often you will find the REAL listing pops up on Zillow, Trulia etc.
NEVER EVER fill out an application that gives your personal information online without getting chance to view the property and meet the property manager, REALTOR® or owner.
NEVER EVER wire or send money
Contact a REALTOR® for help in finding your next rental. In light of all the scamming many property owners are offering property via a licensed real estate professional to try to avoid these issues. This home is a PERFECT example, because the owner was working with a REALTOR® the home was also listed in the MLS which broadcast it to other sites. When the perspective tenant search the address he could see he was being scammed.
You can flag this on craigslist but our experience is craiglist refuses to police this or help resolve this problem. After more than 7 years they have NO system in place for home owners, renters and REALTORS® to protect themselves. You would think after all this time they would have SOME set up for Home owners and real estate professionals to email or click a link to report a highjacked home. They still only offer the simple flag that does not even let you specify WHY you are flagging it. Tsk Tsk craigslist time to offer a solution to the problem instead of just turning a blind eye to it.
BE CAREFUL, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
Our 2010 Post on this is below
If you are like me you have heard of the rental scams all over our city, state and yes the nation. There are many variations of the scam but for the purpose of this blog I am going to speak of one. The scammer finds a listing on the internet, these homes are easily accessible sue to the technology offered to consumers via the internet. The “Scammer” takes the listing information and posts the listing on craigslist.com. They do not include the address in the subject line merely the area and rental amount (typically the rental amount is grossly low). The consumer contacts the implied owner wanting information on the home and is sent something like this:
From: Jane Doe <email@example.com>

To: “Mary Smith”

Now what makes this a bit more disturbing is that this scammer actually used the name of the Real and Legal owner of the property, one would assume this was secured through public tax information.
What steps can you take? Number one report this! You can go to your state attorney general, the FBI Internet Crime Unit and our the location of the posting, in this instance Craigslist. For the record I made a complaint and flagged an ad such at this over 4 hours ago on craigslist and still the posting remains in place.
Real Estate Agents make your buyers and sellers aware of what is going on out there. No agent wants their seller client surprised by a knock on the door of someone who is thinking they have just rented the home.
Renters, be smart…. Contact a Real Estate Agent to assist you or do your homework before you send ANYONE money. This web site is a good source of information on how to protect yourself. http://www.rentalscams.org
How to Avoid being a victim:
Only deal with LOCAL home owners or prospective landlords
Be suspicious if someone wants you to wire money ANYWHERE
Do not give out your personal information
Know what the average rental rate is for what you are looking for, if it seems to good to be true it is!
A landlord/Seller who is out of the country on a Mission trip should cause red flags to fly up EVERYWHERE
